Taking a Closer Look at Diamond Cut
Nothing is more exciting than asking for your true love’s hand in marriage, which is why it’s important to start planning early. Before you can ask those famous four words, you’ll need to have the perfect diamond engagement ring. Here at Toner Jewelry, we can help you find the perfect diamond ring by helping you learn more about the four Cs of diamonds. One of the Cs, diamond cut, is often considered one of the most important qualities:
Before you can start learning about different types of diamond cuts, it’s essential to understand just what this quality describes. Many people believe diamond cut refers to the actual shape of the diamond, such as round, oval, or princess. Diamond shape is not the same as diamond cut, though. The cut actually refers to the brilliance offered by each diamond. The amount of brilliance displayed is dependent on the facets cut into each diamond.
- Ideal Cuts
Diamond cut grading is determined by the reflective qualities found within each unique stone. Diamonds should be cut to provide the most brilliance—letting light come in and out through the stone to create a dazzling display of sparkle and shine. Diamonds with ideal cuts typically have the highest value, because they provide the most brilliance. Ideal cuts take light in through the top of the stone. Because of the facets, the light travels vertically to the bottom of the stone, where it then hits and moves horizontally to the other side of the stone. The cuts then allow the light to travel straight back up through the top, giving the diamond an incomparable shine and radiance. - Shallow and Deep Cuts
Shallow cut diamonds take light in through the top of the stone as well, but this light simply travels out the bottom of the stone because of the shallow facets. Deep cut diamonds lose their light through the side of the stone because of their depth. This is why ideal cut diamonds are more than worth their price—they simply shine the brightest!
